The Do’s and Don’ts of Using AI for Budgeting

A recent study revealed that two out of every three people are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) regularly in their daily lives. From drafting emails, to suggesting dinner recipes, AI seems to be everywhere, but does it belong in your budget? Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind if you’re considering using generative AI tools (like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc.) to help craft a monthly budget.

DO use AI for brainstorming budgets

AI can be a handy thought partner when you’re just getting started with a budget. Planning a family vacation to Florida? You can ask an AI tool to suggest a sample budget that includes flights, hotels, meals and activities. Trying to rein in grocery spending? You could have it create a weekly grocery plan for a household of two. You might even use an AI tool to help group your monthly expenses into categories for easy tracking.

DON’T rely on AI for your actual financial records

Remember, AI tools can make mistakes. The most secure and reliable way to track your budget is to stay in the loop, regardless of what tool you use. Think of AI as a brainstorming helper, not the official record-keeper of your finances.

DO keep your personal details private

When using AI tools, stick to general questions and examples. Instead of sharing personal details, frame your request broadly like, “What’s a reasonable grocery budget for a college student in Arizona?” or “How much does the average household in Oklahoma City spend on utilities?”

DON’T upload sensitive information

Never enter your account numbers, Social Security Number or private financial statements into generative AI tools. These tools aren’t secure vaults, and your sensitive data should always stay private.

DO use AI to explore “what if” scenarios

AI is great at helping you imagine different possibilities. You could ask, “How much do I need to set aside each pay period to save for a new car in two years?” or “What exercises could I do at home to replace my monthly gym membership?” These prompts can open your eyes to trade-offs and spark ideas for achievable savings goals.

DON’T assume AI knows your personal priorities

AI doesn’t know your full financial picture or your personal values. Maybe you’d rather prioritize saving for a home renovation than a summer vacation. That’s something only you can decide. AI can provide examples, but it can’t set your goals for you.

DO use AI to get tips on saving strategies

AI can offer suggestions to make budgeting feel easier. For instance, it can recommend free date night ideas or weekend activities to entertain out of town guests. You might even use an AI powered thermostat or home devices to save on energy costs. These practical tips can make a budget more manageable and help you stay motivated.

DON’T confuse AI with expert financial advice

AI isn’t a financial advisor, and it doesn’t know your long-term plans, obligations or risk tolerance. When it comes to major financial decisions, like investing, retirement planning or managing debt, it’s always best to turn to trusted professionals who can tailor advice to your specific needs.

By following these do’s and don’ts, you can enjoy the convenience of AI while keeping your finances safe, secure and firmly under your control.
